A Star’s Start to the Year

Big dreams

Bigger list

Accomplishments

Are what I meant

To learn

And speak

Another’s

Tongue of mother

To eat

From fresh

And never

From Macs and Helpers

To wake

With ease

And jump

For joy to remove the lumps

To speak

So soft

And kind

Even when the kids don’t mind

I make

The list

With glee

If not reality

Today is

The day

To start

The year with drive and heart

The slate

Is clean

The will

Is strong, headed uphill

But that

Was “Yes”-terday

And now

My life has come to play

I ate

And slept

And yelled

It’s true,  I failed

The third

Day of

The year

Truth came to bear

But I

Remind

Myself…

There ‘s always next year!

I tried my hand at Poetry again with the lovely Melissa B. at The Scholastic Scribe.

Whispered Whys?

“Why?” she whispers
Her breath tickling my ears
“I don’t know”
Came my reply.

“But why?”
Her voice insisted.
“Still don’t know”
Again was my reply.

“I need to know”
She gasped, exasperrated.
“I know you do…”
I tried to say.

“You should know”
Hair brushing against my nose.
“You’re right…” I said.
“I should know”.

“What do I know?”
I whispered back.
“What? What do you know?”
Warmth on my cheek.

“What? What? What?”
She demands again.
“I know I love you”
I say with a smile.

“You know that?”
She says back
“You know you love me?”
“You do?”

“Yes, I know I love you,”
“Yes, yes. I do”.
In her ear, I said,
“You know that this is true”.

I tried my hand again at poetry in honor of Mrs. Scribe over at
The Scholastic Scribe.

If It’s Tuesday, It Must Be Poetry

The amazing Mrs. Scribe over at The Scholastic Scribe is throwing down some verse in the name of a Poetry Slam. I couldn’t resist joining in but I offer this warning — “Read at Your Own Risk!”

Dream Interrupted

The light clicks. On.

I blink.

A lasered rectangle is cut

Into the darkness

While a Fantasia of dust

Dances in the stripes of light.

The door opens

Washing me fully out

Of golden slumbers

Bathing me in

Its harsh brass light.

Click.

Newly blind, I feel

Your arms encase me.

“Shhh. Go back to sleep.

It’s not time to wake,” you

Whisper. I settle back into

Your arms. My eyes flutter closed.

A shrill beep throws me into

The waking world.

I sit up, eyes glazed

You snore at my side.

“Ah! “ I say to myself.

“It was all a dream”.

Happy Tuesday, everyone!

A Love Letter

Ode to Halloween Candy

Your bright packaging draws my eye

Orange, black, silver, and gold

I try to look away but a glint of light

Catches on your cellophane and foil

“Come to me”, you call

“No”, I say. “I need you not”.

“You do need me. You know you do!”

“I shouldn’t”, I say. But even as I say these words,

I look down to find you in my hands.

Feeling much like Alice in her Rabbit Hole

“Eat Me”, is what you seem to say.

Unlike Alice, I know which way I will grow

Bigger and bigger and bigger

“It’s only once a year. Surely, it’s okay…”

The wrapper crinkles in my hand. It tempts my very core.

As I feel the package tear into two, the chocolate grazes…

“Mommy. May I have a piece of candy?”

“Of course, dear. Please take this one”

Aah. Disaster averted. (Until next year).
