I Love an Underdog

I love sports movies.

I mean I love, Love, LOVE sports movies.

I don’t even love sports, but I love sports movies. Especially, if its about underdogs. Years ago, I wrote about my love of the movie, “Rudy”. I have seen that movies dozens of times.

I love that if it’s good, it’s not about the sport at all. It’s about fighting for a dream despite odds that seem impossible overcome. Anyone who has seen the groundskeeper yell at Rudy that he’s… “5 foot nothin', 100 and nothin', and you have barely a speck of athletic ability,” and yet knows that he believes in Rudy more than the a blue sky, gets what I mean.

American Underdog - Life made them underdogs. Faith made them champions.

Sports movies are true versions of the classic hero’s journey. Who can ask for better storytelling than that? It is more, though. It refills the emotional bucket that can get drained as one pursues their own dreams. I used to say that I was built better for acting than Rudy was for football, so if he could make his dream come true, I could, too.
