Come Play in May -- Heroes

Today's Prompt is Heroes My life has presented me with a lot of mentors, leaders, and other dear people that have shaped the person I have become. But heroes are something beyond that. Heroes are people that put action in their life over words. Sacrifice is at the heart of their actions and they inspire the rest of us to do better.

***

My husband is a hero to me. This may sound casual even trite but I mean it from my heart. After 9/11, he made a choice to protect his country rather than continue to pursue his own personal dreams. He has served honorably on multiple tours both abroad and stateside including a tour of Iraq. When his country called, he answered. He is my hero.

***

There are many like him. But there are other heroes out there who don't wear a military uniform. 9/11 had many who wore the blue of NYPD or the red of multiple Engine Houses were willing to run in to help others run out. And there were many heroes who wore no uniform at all that did the same -- men with baseball caps turned away planes and ran up the stairs into smoke and oblivion. All were heroes.

***

I am thankful to all of them and the many more that I will never know. To everyone who sees danger and chooses it i the name of others, you are my hero. May God bless you all.
